This book was recommended to me by two different coworkers. A book about books and bookstores , one I would enjoy. They were right! What a fantastic read. Two sentences that really had me shaking my head in agreement:
" there ain't nobody in the world like book people". And " I like talking about books with people who like talking about books". If you like books about books, I highly recommend this book! ...more

I flew through this wonderful story of a cranky bookstore owner and his journey through literature to happiness. Each chapter begins with a quote from a book or short story and then commentary that A..J. Fikry has written for his daughter, Maya. Throughout the story, A.J. lets us in on the intricacies of running an independent bookstore which is so appealing to this book lover. It was the perfect read for a weekend spent with other book lovers!

This is a delightful little gem of a book, which, if I had a keeper shelf, would go alongside my other favorite books-about-books, 84 Charing Cross Road and Parnassus on Wheels. It is a very easy and engaging read as evidenced by the fact that I read it in less than 5 hours on a cross country flight from Phoenix to NYC. Normally I don't read very well on airplanes as there are too many distractions but this sucked me in and made the flight go really fast.

The Storied Life Of A.J.Fikry
by
Gabrielle Zevin
What it's all about...
A.J.Fikry...dour humorless little man...unchanging in his ways until he finds a little girl in his bookstore with an Elmo doll, a picture book and a note that asks him to take please take care of Maya.
My thoughts after reading this book...
OMG...I loved this book...it has everything I love! Characters with dry humor and wit...I freaking loved A.J.Fikry! Such an odd sad little man...so rigid in his opinions about books and life an ...more

I was drawn to read this after seeing many mentions for it on book/reader websites and emails, all giving it high praise. I thought this was a good story that book lovers will feel a kinship with. After his wife's death A.J. Fikry seems to be going through the motions of life, running the bookstore they had bought together during the day and eating bad microwave cooked meals and drinking himself to sleep at night. And then one night something is left at his store that will change his life foreve

Let me just start out by saying I will read any book that is about a bookstore or books. I love them! So when I read about this book I knew right away that I had to read it.
A.J. Fikrey is a widower, a bookstore owner, and a drunk. He is on the verge of bankruptcy when within a span of a few days his life changes dramatically. He discovers that his rare copy of Poe's Tamerlane, worth a lot of money has been stolen, and two year old Maya is left on his doorstep. Fikrey decides he must keep Maya as ...more

A good, but somewhat light read. There were a few good plot developments, but overall felt a little predictable. There were some missed opportunities for going a little deeper, and yet some where it felt like you were being hammered of the head with the author's point. I recommend it to book lovers as it is world of reading that is familiar and fun.

What an amazing book! A.J. Fikry, A.J. Fikry! I think he is the best character in this story. This would make an amazing movie if done with the right actors and director. He should be played by Kal Penn, that is who I had in my head. Okay. I would recommend everyone who loves a good story, with real raw emotions, and not too heavy now, read this book. I have always wanted to own a small bookstore, and am one of those people who do not like mega bookstores, so I loved the idea of a small family

I love books about books. I can’t help it, I just do. We meet A.J. Fikry when he’s in a place of despair. His book store is failing, his wife is dead, his best friend is a womanizing drunk. A.J is a grump. He’s a book snob. He reminded me of my husband (a former book seller)-who I love dearly-but he is also a book snob (and maybe a grump).
“Everyone thinks they have good taste, but most people do not have good taste. In fact, I’d argue that most people have ...more
