Beautiful writing in service of a less completely thought-thru plot.
The story was compelling, and it moved quickly along. Much action occurs, and the take on vampires was a new and original twist on viral disease vectors. Furthermore, the way the story was written was powerful and convincing in the language and the fully fleshed characters.

Fantastic first part, followed by disappointment.
The first section of The Passage has a slow, character driven buildup to an amazing and terrifying climax. After that, it becomes more of a conventional post-apocalype story; which I probably would have thought perfectly serviceable except for the letdown given the early promise. The second part (which is the bulk of the novel) still has some very good elements, but it also frequently lapses into cliché, ridiculousness, and (literal) Deus ex mach ...more

I loved this book! Even though this is another book in a long line of dystopians that has come out lately, the concept is fascinating and I loved how Cronin developed the characters. It is a long book but I still couldn't put it down. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but I am holding out judgment until I read the next installment.
