A girl's coming of age in Iran during the overthrow of the Shah, and her witnessing the loss of freedoms suffered by the Iranians, especially women. Very illuminating and humanizing. It helped me see Iran as a country with women like me, smart and cool but oppressed by an extremist government.

I fully realize I'm the last person on earth to read this book. I didn't find it fully engaging, but I do respect its groundbreakingness and there are some seriously gorgeous pages.
I really want to know how these authors (including MariNaomi, and others) make their drawings look like woodblocks, since they're not. ...more
