This is a very lengthy 1400+ page novel about Russian nobility at the time of the Napoleonic invasion. It mostly deals with who marries who and who successfully finds contentment in their marriage and who does not and why. So even though the principal characters are not from a time and place and station in life most of us can identify with, they are still very human. It is their humanness that makes us care about them.
