The pronciple female character in this book is named "Bathsheba", and that is a clue to the storyline of this book. There is a parallel to the story of King David and Bathsheba of the Bible. As we all know, David's obsession with Bathsheba led to his downfall, with his being responsible for the death of Bathsheba's husband. In this book, we see three men obsessed with Bathsheba, which leads to misfortune for all of them. But in the end, the best man wins.
