Having recently read both Mansfield Park and Jude the Obscure, I realized that they are similar in that they both deal with essentially the same issue. While there are other themes in both, the theme they share is social ascendancy. Both novels show us what happens when an individual experiences or attempts to experience a transition from a lower to a higher social class.
