After having read this about a dozen times while I was in high school and college, I just re-read it for the first time in over a decade, which was almost like reading this for the first all over again, despite recalling details and even some sentences word-for-word.
When I was younger, I think I read this as a beautifully written coming-of-age story that happened to be a tragedy. I knew it was depressing, but compared to my own life, it didn't really register as such for me.

This was a tough one for me. After about 40 pages, I wasn't sure that I could finish this book. The suicides take front and center from the first page in graphic and disturbing detail. I am not a queasy reader, and I have never put a book down due to content, but this one came close.
Ultimately, I persevered, and I am glad that I did, if for nothing but the beautiful prose. There were snippets of writing that were absolute word candy. This book certainly deserves the praise it received for its c ...more
