After having read this about a dozen times while I was in high school and college, I just re-read it for the first time in over a decade, which was almost like reading this for the first all over again, despite recalling details and even some sentences word-for-word.

When I was younger, I think I read this as a beautifully written coming-of-age story that happened to be a tragedy. I knew it was depressing, but compared to my own life, it didn't really register as such for me.

This was a tough one for me. After about 40 pages, I wasn't sure that I could finish this book. The suicides take front and center from the first page in graphic and disturbing detail. I am not a queasy reader, and I have never put a book down due to content, but this one came close.

Ultimately, I persevered, and I am glad that I did, if for nothing but the beautiful prose. There were snippets of writing that were absolute word candy. This book certainly deserves the praise it received for its c

Beautifully writing that captures the aching coming of age of teenage sexuality with the wisp of nostalgia of the aged. The pretext of an investigation in the future by the unnamed boys of the neighborhood works marvelously -- a refreshing narrative take -- the first person plural narrator.
