I devoured this book in a day. The voice of young Starr is authentic and deeply moving. This book is a much needed voice for people of color and victims of police brutality, and a stark exposition of white privilege. You'll need to be up on your slang (or keep Urban Dictionary handy).

I laughed. I cried. I cried some more. And then I thanked Black Jesus for Angie Thomas. Because of her, a relatable and approachable book that provides a platform to discuss racism, both overt and systemic, exists for everyone to read.
This has over a 4 star average rating on here, so I feel like all that’s left for me to say is read the damn thing.

I went into this book with limited expectations. I am normally not a huge fan of YA. However, I immediately began to appreciate the engaging tone and characterization. The author was able to display racial oppression through showing it, versus preaching about it. We had a lively book club discussion about The Hate U Give, one of the best I've ever been a part of. The book did feel a bit too long, but overall readable and the narrator of the audio book was amazing.
