The story of Celie as she battles oppression and abuse on her way to finding herself.
Would you be interested in hearing about a friend's trip by reading a bunch of letter describing it? Me either. That is how most of this story is handled, through a backstory of reading years of letters written to Celie by her sister. I found it tedious. I enjoyed Celie's story, but I didn't love it. I didn't feel invested in the story or a connection with Celie herself, but I enjoyed watching her find her voice and confidence over the years through letters to God and her sister.
