Bill Hodges is a retired detective married to TV, junk food and his ballooning waistline. When he receives a taunting letter, from someone claiming to know about a mass killing at a job fair, the writer taunts that Bill might find permanent relief from his troubles by just ending them. Galvanized into action, the "det-ret" finds some unlikely heroes who also overcome their flaws in order to help Hodges thwart an evil plot of mass destruction.

This was my first encounter with Stephen King, and I have to say, it made me anxious to read more! Mr. Mercedes was a pure joy ride (ha!). Entertaining and captivating from the first page.
