The language of this piece is poetic and beautiful; definite word candy. I really enjoyed the weaving of Marie-Laure and Werner's stories and the anticipation of the resolution kept the pages turning.
However - *Mild Spoiler Alert* - the ending was not my favorite.
After all the build up (80% of the book) to the discovery of the diamond, to the meeting of Marie and Werner, it felt so anti-climatic. It was just a few pages, just a brief interaction, and then it was over. All the build up for almost ...more

I don't think I have enjoyed a book this much since I read The Book Thief. The writing is beautiful beyond description. The characters are interesting/fascinating/likable/brave people who do extraordinary things to survive in unimaginable circumstances. The story is an amazing work of historical fiction.
Their are so many wonderful quotes from this book .... one of my favorites is "Why else do any of this if not to become who we want to be?"
This book will stay with me a very, very long time.

Unseen situations and people unknowingly influence our everyday lives. This book explores how those unseen forces shaped ordinary lives during WWII and turned them into something extraordinary. Beautifully written in short, alternating view chapters, this book is hard to put down. I especially appreciated the realistic manner in which situations were faced and resolved.
