Mary Bowser was a real African American woman, freed and educated in the North, only to return to the south to pose as a slave in order to spy on Rebel President Jefferson Davis in his own home. Although history tells us little about Mary, her actions have inspired me. She must have been every bit the brave, self-less, and determined woman that Lois Leveen paints her to be. A truly inspiring read about a woman who wouldn't just sit by and wait for slavery to end by the efforts of others.

Based on a true story of a freed slave who went North to gain her education but returned to the South during the Civil War as a spy. Very few facts exist about her but this book is so authentic that you have to remind yourself that it's fiction. The author very adeptly places you in Mary Bowser's shoes. You feel as if you were living her life.
