Gone wild for Michael Grant's new book : "Gone"
This book blew me away. It is one of the best books I've ever read. Reading the summary you get the feeling that it might be slightly too kiddy, or too much like other series such as "Left Behind," but it is a surprisingly awesome achievement by Grant. I cannot remember a time when I have been so unable to put a book down. At 4:00 I had to tear myself away in order to be able to get up for work the next morning. This story is a fantastic, current, Gone wild for Michael Grant's new book : "Gone"
This book blew me away. It is one of the best books I've ever read. Reading the summary you get the feeling that it might be slightly too kiddy, or too much like other series such as "Left Behind," but it is a surprisingly awesome achievement by Grant. I cannot remember a time when I have been so unable to put a book down. At 4:00 I had to tear myself away in order to be able to get up for work the next morning. This story is a fantastic, current, throwback to books like "Lord of the Flies," but for those of us, who trudged through LOTF in high school, this book has a much quicker and action packed pace. The plot begins when, in a split second, everyone over the age of 15 disappears. As the world quickly swirls into chaos sides are taken, lines are drawn, and certain kids start to vie for power in their new surroundings. We quickly learn that their town centers on a nuclear power plant that had a huge meltdown sometime in the past, and are led to believe that it could have something to do with the eerie events going on now. Later still, it is discovered that some kids are developing powers such and telekinesis, super speed, or the ability to shoot flames from their hands. Then the children find that their city has a strange barrier around it that separates them not only physically from the outside world, but also blocks off all communication to them. As more children reach their fifteenth birthday they begin to disappear themselves, and others wonder if the rest of the world even exists anymore, if they are trying to find a way to rescue them, and how all this happened in the first place. In this fast paced novel there are many showdowns between the symbolic good and evil, and messages, and themes of hope, and survival, and perseverance, and the question of how far you would go to protect yourself and those you love. And, as any good story has, there is an underlying love story, and though played out with young teens, the interaction is incredibly believable and witty, and yes romantic. I discovered after reading this that it is written by the husband of K.A. Applegate the famous author of the “Animorphs” series (which my little brother loves) and many other books. The story ends with room for a sequel, and the web suggests that this will become a 6 book epic series. I cannot recommend this book enough, if I could stand on the roof of the library and scream: Read it, Read it, Read it, that still wouldn't do this book justice. By far the best book I’ve read in years, and I am already super anxious for the sequel rumored to be coming next June. That’s all for now! Read it! You will not be sorry.
