A Boring Saint: "A Canticle for Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller Jr.

This novel is praised and highly recommended by a lot of people, but I do not agree with them. The story consists of three parts that were formerly written as separate short stories.
Part 1: interesting concept, some amusing scenes - 2 stars
Part 2: boring, nothing else - 1 star
Part 3: a glint of suspense and a moral dilemma - 3 stars
That makes an average of 2 stars.

This one is going to take a while to process. There's much to process. This type of story represents the epitome of sci-fi/fantasy using a speculative world to explore the core meaning and purpose of life. Yet it was highly readable.

Unfortunately, however, it is very much a book of its time regarding sexism and racism. Sigh.

Some big ideas but no real story. If this book were an actor I'd describe him as having a wooden delivery and absolutely no charisma whatsoever, despite being highly intelligent. Also, not a single female character. Why? Some really heavy handed religious messages. I couldn't bring myself to finish the last 40 pages. It was just such a damn slog. If you're going to have three different time periods and no reoccurring characters to invest in, you gotta be entertaining at least. It has a few charm ...more

As post-apocalyptic science fiction novels go... awesome. The in-depth history involved in this is well thought out and obviously involved intensive research. I love how its not riddled with the typical road-warrior type post-apocalyptic elements (not that I don't like reading those as well, but they're kind of a trope for the sub-genre... and even the tropes that are present, well, they weren't tropes when it was written and most likely started here). This is looked at as one of the classics fo ...more

It's a fine book, but it's more clever than it is interesting, I find. The characters are uninspiring, and it feels more like a Medieval alternate history novel than a real SF story for the most part of the novel. Didn't create much of a lasting impression. ...more

Solid read about a post-apocalyptic future in 3 acts. Funny, ambitious, ominous. Not perfect, but worth 5 stars for its vision, humor, likable characters, and lack of any flaws that actually bothered me, although the third act bites off a wee bit more than it can chew.
