This was a thoroughly entertaining romp through old Italy when Commedia del Arte ruled. And since I did Commedia theatre, it was especially amusing. There's some fine characters, as a matter of fact all of them were people I would like to know in real life. Well, except for one or 2, but even those, not quite human, have their purpose and even become redeemable. Extremely clever spin on journeying through a life-changing maze.

This was not entirely my cup of tea, though I think it is well written. I can see how another reader would give it four stars. The language is lush and the setting richly imagined. The characters have compelling backstories and personal challenges. At the same time, I found several of them to be a bit too buffoonish for my taste; I skimmed the parts about certain characters, keeping an eye out for the ones I preferred.
what a fun tale! with occasional depths. and some really, really great imagery--snyder comes up with some truly startling images.
the story is a little predictable in some spots, particularly in the latter part of the book, but on the whole i think it's a marvelous read. i'm definitely going to read her other books, and will certainly look forward to her next release. ...more
