This was not entirely my cup of tea, though I think it is well written. I can see how another reader would give it four stars. The language is lush and the setting richly imagined. The characters have compelling backstories and personal challenges. At the same time, I found several of them to be a bit too buffoonish for my taste; I skimmed the parts about certain characters, keeping an eye out for the ones I preferred.

what a fun tale! with occasional depths. and some really, really great imagery--snyder comes up with some truly startling images.

the story is a little predictable in some spots, particularly in the latter part of the book, but on the whole i think it's a marvelous read. i'm definitely going to read her other books, and will certainly look forward to her next release.
