I want to know what book the blurb is describing because it has nothing to do with the book I just read. Light is a very confusing book with three plots taking place in two time periods, 400 years apart. It's quite poetic, but not very comprehensible. Around page 200, I had to go back and re-read chapter one. It reminded me of something by Tim Powers. Having finished, I don't think I could really tell you what this book was about. That's a lie, I never finished it. This book tried so hard that it ended up making very little sense and was far too hard to follow. I'm surprised the likes of Iain Banks spoke so highly of it. Normally I'd devour some wacky sci-fi but personally thought this was awful.

I don't know what to say about Light. The prose is beautiful, bordering on poetic, but the novel itself is largely plotless. Characters meander about, being acted upon by deus ex machina forces until they finally arrive at the novel's largely lacklustre conclusion. In terms of wordplay and worldbuilding, Harrison is a master. In terms of building a compelling story... or hell, even giving his characters something to do... he's a long way from the great authors of science fiction and fantasy.

50 pages into this book and while the vocabulary is fun, i realize i don't care about one stinking person in the whole book, and they don't interest me enough for other reasons to go on.
