A re-read for me. Such an intense atmospheric book. I read this slowly as it felt too real and depressing. So many of the issues in the book are current issues: racism, fires, lack of water. But there’s a hopefulness throughout that emphasizes acceptance of, not just change as is clearly stated, but the need for both self-responsibility and caring for others, if others are also making responsible choices. This book is excellent. A chilling vision of America brought to its knees by climate change, a meditation on critical thinking and its role in the formation of religion, and a nuanced look at what makes a family, this has instantly become one of my favorite speculative fiction novels.
The narrator is strong, the characters are complex, and there is plenty of action and tension for the reader who loves a good page turner. Oh, it's also heartbreaking and even hopeful at times. So there's that.
