My enjoyment of this book ranks midway between those who have nothing bad to say about it, and those who can't find anything nice to say. I liked the beginning of the story and I really liked the way it ended. And I liked the parts in the middle that involved Jake's growing friendship with Walter, and I have to say that I thought his emotion on learning what happened to Walter & Camel seemed the most real part of his emotional involvement - and that includes the 'romance' in the affair with Marl ...more

Shelves: favorite, romance, fiction, book-to-movie

I was having qualms everytime I try another author for the first time. Though this have been included in some of the lists here in Goodreads, I just don't have the motivation to read it. Maybe, it was because of the genre that this novel belongs-romance-which I least prefer. But then, for all those times that I have stumbled on some good reviews and praises that I accidentally read, I then thought to give it a try. And it was worth the risk and the money I paid in the bookstore. ...more

I liked this book but not quite as much as I expected to like it. It took me awhile to get into the book, but once I did, I really enjoyed the story. I felt like the ending was really abrupt, however, and I would have liked further expansion there. Overall, it was a good read.

Audiobook: Great book, fabulous narrator - I don't often read these sort of books but I really enjoyed this one. I found the 90-93 yo perspective in the nursing home quite thought provoking and at times, extremely amusing. I loved the final ending. ...more

I found this book enjoyable. The characters were very interesting as was the fact that the book was set during the Depression. The ending left little be desired.
