OK, got a little bored with Percy Jackson, and since Ann S. was nice enough to lend me her copy, I started...and could NOT stop. I LOVE this character's voice, and I totally see why this story is so engaging. I've never read a better blow by blow account of love coming to fruition. Very nicely done, and Miranda, you need to bring me your copies of 2, 3, and 4 to borrow over the break.

I did enjoy the book a lot. I love a new take on vampires. It all began with Anne Rice and now continues with Stephanie Myers. I've read different reviews and mulled them over while I was reading. I really do think she gives a new spin to vampires and disagree with Bella's obsession with Edward as a bad influence for girls. He's a vampire. They are not going to be like regular guys.

You know what's weird about Twilight? Yes, the Twi-hard fans are obsessive and worrisome and extremely off-putting, but the only difference between them and Trekkies is that while Trekkies tend to stay within their own circles, Twi-hards tend to be distressingly vocal and absolutely everywhere. The thing that I find absolutely wild about Twilight is the hatred. Just look at this site. For every "OMG TWILIGHT IS THE BEST BOOK EVER" review, there is a page long rant about how Twilight is the worst You know what's weird about Twilight? The thing that I find absolutely wild about Twilight is the hatred. Just look at this site. For every "OMG TWILIGHT IS THE BEST BOOK EVER" review, there is a page long rant about how Twilight is the worst book ever. (Edit: after looking at the numbers it turns out there are more than three times the five-star reviews than there are one-star reviews, but the point still stands) That it's the stupidest, most poorly written, insidious dreck ever to be published. You'd think Stephanie Meyer had murdered modern literature. I'm sure there are people who have said so.

So why all the hate? In my opinion, it's reactionary. I went through a period of it myself, immediately following the phase where I went to the midnight release of Breaking Dawn. Yes, I did that. No, I am not an idiot. I am not illiterate. Voltaire and Ellison top my list of favorite authors. But damn, these books are like crack.

But that was before Twilight really began to gain widespread attention. As soon as it did, and the intensity of the Twi-hard movement became apparent, there was a cultural backlash, and suddenly it seemed like unless you denounced Twilight and all its disciples as idiotic, you were clearly ignorant and childish. People who had never read it, and only understood what it was about from sarcastic summaries from other people who had never read it, were dripping with scorn and somehow believing that the other side was ignorant. It took a year or two, but I realized I wasn't comfortable aligning myself with those people either.

So my feelings about Twilight seesawed for a while, and finally, five years after I first read it, I came to this conclusion: I respect Stephanie Meyer from a purely capitalist point of view. She's hella good at giving girls what they want, and she's making bank doing it. If I were in her shoes, I'd be doing the exact same thing. On the whole, Twilight makes me roll my eyes a bit, but it's harmless wish fulfillment. All in all, it really isn't deserving of the love or the hatred.

So if seeing forty-year-old women get full-back tattoos of poor abused Robert Pattinson's face turns you into a giant squid of anger, relax. In the end, the only thing getting hurt is your blood pressure. ...more

My wife got this book from one of her co-workers for Christmas in a goodie-bag. Humourously she passes it on to me since I spend so much time reading. The book is galaxies better than the cheezy movie Hollywood produced. I actually enjoyed the story immensely. I would recommend this story even to folks who do not usually read vampire tales.
