Im not even sure where or how to begin… This was my first Rina Kent book… and to be honest, it was not what I expected. In a great way.

Perhaps I’ve read too many dark romances I would categorize more as kinky (in a gritty setting.) Perhaps I’ve met too many villains I would consider anti-heroes... But when I read the author’s lengthy trigger warning, I expected nothing more than the usual fanfare.

The book begins with the infamous cliff incident… Needless to say, it left me feeling… on edge?

That scene didn't read to me as dark romance. There was no blurring of lines. No conflict between resistance and pleasure. And I finally understood what critics of the genre mean when they say: take away the money/power and looks of the MMC and you get a horror story… a thriller at best.

I did not enjoy this scene. Not as a dark romance reader anyway. But it got my attention. Killian, the MMC, is a true psychopath. We are not simply told he is. He does not just hurt bad guys and deserving people…and therefore remain somewhat irreproachable throughout the entire novel, deviating only from societal moral standards… but never those of the intended audience.

And that made all the difference. That cliff scene set the tone for the entire book. For the rest of their relationship. It made the stakes real. When the FMC struggles with her emerging feelings, her reluctance is understandable.

I was engrossed in Killian and Glyn’s dynamic. His needs and desires… and eventually feelings, slowly and realistically morph throughout the story. From something purely predatorial, to something more parasitic. To finally.. something akin to love. It was a fascinating journey, and a believable one. The author excelled at making me see the FMC through his eyes. I understood what made her special to him. Why HER… and not the others… and that is no easy task.

The fact that the book BEGINS with the cliff scene… and somehow… Ms. Kent still managed to lure me in alongside the FMC is quite impressive.

All in all, most definitely not a book I would widely recommend. And it does lean on the YA/NA side (university students/Skull & Bones type secret society...) Perhaps something to consider if that isn't your thing. But if you are familiar with my taste for unconventional dynamics… and share my fascination… then yes. Absolutely yes. Go for it. ...more

It started out pretty good. I was intrigued by the bit of mystery as well but towards the middle idk.. I felt things (them banging every 5 seconds) started getting a bit repetitive.

I’m also not a huge fan of how they got together.. it wasn’t really her choice, at all! And yeah, eventually she ends up truly falling for him and they have good chemistry I guess but, idk. It was just ok imo.

I tried to like this guys.. i really did. The writing didn’t work for me. The dialogue felt so forced and expositional, it was like the author was dumping info on me instead of letting the story unfold. And Glyndon? I didn’t buy her feelings AT ALL, it felt like she was just checking boxes. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, which made the whole thing fall flat.

What i wanted was one real emotional depth, maybe some flashbacks between Glyndon and Devlin to make their relationship make ...more

Devoured. Okay so um low-key it was actually gooood

I am struggling to rate and review this book. I read this author's Deception Trilogy and really loved it. I started this one as a group read. And I think that 1) I needed to read earlier books before this one, because even though this says it can be read as a standalone, it really can't if you want to get the most from the story.
