Vision trouble meant that it took me a LOOONG time to read this, over three months. I'm not sure if it would have felt as epic if I had "read" this as an audiobook. Whether because of the timelapse for me, or because of the writing, this book seemed EPIC.
I never would have believed that a first-person POV (and a *very* eccentric, closed POV at that) could have seemed so sweeping, so wide ranging. Oskar is like Ignatius C. Reiley without the indignation. Not very charming, but extremely memorable ...more

Off to a running start. A provisional 5 stars for the first two chapters. Grass moves his story at a breakneck pace without Oskar leaving the room!
The death of the cats.
Perhaps this should be required reading for political science majors and German schoolchildren.
Amazing book.
With the war coming to an end, things getting a little strange for Oskar.
Final judgement: read this book. Like life, there are bits you will labor through, and soar through others. But you will not forget it.
