I really like Flaubert's writing. He does not just tell what something looked like, but also what it sounded like and smelled. And the writing is non-jugding. So Charles is boring? Flaubert does not tell us if that is good a bad. He is calm and satisfied with the small things in life. He don't even say that Charles is boring – he shows us. That makes it much harder to tell what Flaubert's intent was, I think.
