Loved this book, Gogol's sense of humour comes through so strongly, however I was dissappointed that it wasn't finished.

So the first half is five-star material and the second half is kind of ???, so I averaged that for my rating. The start was great: Author-meta, keeping the audience in the dark, absurdism. It seemed like a lot of inovations in one place... But the second half wasn't nearly so clever and just not very well put together. Overall, the humor seemed very... British to me, in a modern way.

Although it fell apart a bit toward the end, the plot to buy the dead is a masterstroke.
