I wish I had been better acquainted with the Islamic versions of these stories before I read this. I can't tell what is the traditionally Islamic take on these tales that are well known to me from the Old Testament, and what is Mahfouz's own twist.
Anyway, I liked this, although it could have been a little more complex and less frank. I see why it got him stabbed in the neck, although I personally found it mostly innocuous. I'd like to read the Cairo Trilogy sometime.
