Really enjoyed this, which surprised me as I'd been told that it was inspired by Joyce, the author whose books I find don't live up to the hype.
Berlin Alexanderplatz however which revolves around Franz, a man recently released from prison, is interesting, and gives a view of germany in a time of turmoil. Franz is no angel, but he's not a two dimensional character. There are also a large number of characters who reside in Franz's world, some of them more innocent than others.

I thought of this book as the bridge between Ulysees and Infinite Jest, and I can see its influence in many other novels I've read. I really liked the snappy dialog, although it could be a bit hard to follow as an audiobook. (The reader was perfect, by the way.)

Also, Franz was great. Franz is one of those extra memorable characters that find life overwhelmingly bewildering, like Ignatius C. Reilly or Oskar Matzerath.
