This book is much more hilarious than these quotes suggest, honest. I wager that anyone exasperated by the "always-on" and increasingly dim nature of our world will love this scathing but sweet satire.
"They stood together, silent, with their little chests thrust out ahead of them, their eyes quiet and blank, the seemingly endless continuation of their lives stretched out before them."

This is one of the better novels I have read in a long time. Shteyngart looks into the not so distant future, and with great irony and satire, painting a picture of how the worst of our media and consumer obsessions lead us to our downfall as a culture. His anti-hero, Lenny Abramov, remembers the days when we focused on substantial past-times like reading books. He tragically falls in love with a much younger woman, who knows nothing of the pleasures of life "off-line". Please, read it!

Not as quotable as some books I've read this year, but it offers quite a number of laughs and knowing smiles at the near future. And a little bit of sadness at the inevitability of where we're heading...

Absurdistan meets Brave New World. Although written in a darker tone and not as amusing as the author's previous novel, this futuristic satire, saturated with suffocating emotions, is worth giving a chance. The mixture of creepy technology, immigrant issues, consumerism, new world order type of society, complicated family relations, destruction, dealing with unattractiveness and the omnipresent fear of aging and, ultimately, death, is quite fascinating.

Loved this! Great characters and I love a good dystopian novel. Set in a future New York that is both comical and poignant. Staten island is now cool, people live through their electronic devices and people who read real books are seen as weird. China rules the world economy. It's scary because it could be true. ...more

Just a hilarious near-future satire. Read the Goodreads review for a summary I can't top, but I'll just mention the key device owned by everyone, the apparat (takes umlauts on all three a's) which keeps track of their credit, hotness, employability, and everything else.
