I remember loving the movie adaptation as a kid, so I've been looking forward to reading this one. The book is much darker and much better. Miss Trunchbull is a hilariously over-the-top villain, but Matilda's parents are so much worse. The scene where her father tears her book apart in front of her was genuinely upsetting. I wish I had read this as a kid so I could have accepted her terrible family with childish whimsy.
