The best kind of fanfiction - and I don't mean that as a diss. Laurie R. King manages to update Sherlock Holmes while staying true to the style and spirit, and while Mary could easily have been a Mary Sue, she has enough flaws and quirks to be a memorable character in her own right.

I really wanted to like this book, but I found the Mary-Sue main character so perfect and irritating that I just could not bear to continue with it. Did not finish.
