My advice? Just remember the proper names of those people most essential to Hild herself and don't get bogged down in the names of faraway kings that are mentioned exactly two times and then never get mentioned again at all. Fursey, Hereswith, Begu, Cian Broadcloak, Gwaldus, Edwin (the king) and Berguswith are the most important. Hild is a perfect character and I can't wait to see what happens with her (she was a real person and eventually became Saint Hilda) in the next two parts of this planne

A very rare five stars. It's almost like this book was written just for me. Beautiful, lyrical language. A complex, intriguing main female character. Deep historical fiction, with plenty of tasty information. BISEXUALITY. Explorations of gender and sexuality and how they impact and inform your experiences.
