Monstrous Regiment has one trick. It is used well and with care, but even so, it does wear out its welcome eventually, especially when it enables a rather pat conclusion.
As a tale of soldiers and gender, this book is nonetheless quite good. Do not think too hard about the Balkan decorations on the British story - for the most part, the story will not ask you to. A pleasant first listen of a book I'd read in hardback. Unlike many Pratchetts, this one was not quite as interesting to revisit if you vaguely recall the big "twist" of the story. But still good points about the nature of war, governance, commerce, gender, and faith woven through the plot, and well read as always by Stephen Briggs.

I got further along in this (40%) than just about any other Pratchett I’ve tried, excepting of course Good Omens. It’s possible Pratchett just isn’t my thing.
