What Members Thought
This one just wasn't for me. Indeed The Golem and the Jinni seems to be much loved by many and I can find no fault in the prose or narrative execution. However, I just am not compelled to read simply by the "what if x?" story arc that seems to be popular in some genre fiction (throwing some genre shade alert!). I need three-dimensional, engaging characters and a tangible, conflicty-resolutiony plot that isn't just shoved in the last 80 pages to wrap everything up in a neat little bundle.

Absolutely lovely - I had a hard time believing this was a debut novel.
We follow our title characters, a woman of clay and a man of fire, as they share in the common struggles of turn-of-the-century immigrants to New York while trying to maintain the secret of their more fantastic natures. This book had a lot of elements that I really enjoy - the setting (both time and place), well-developed characters, and I loved the intertwining of all their stories and the fantastical elements. I thought it could have been pared down a bit. I say that often though, so maybe it is just my attention span.
