This re-read of a childhood favorite was prompted by a Robin McKinley book club. My heart still loves this book fully and completely, though with adult eyes, I do see some aspects that are less-than-ideal. Beauty probably pre-dated a lot of the tropes that would come to dominate young adult books that would follow in its footsteps-- She's Not Like Other Girls (TM) and bookish/nerdy/tomboy being the ideal heroine in particular. I just re-read this. This is, by far, my favorite version of B&tB, which is already a favorite fairy tale of mine.
One thing I enjoy the most about this book is the lovely family she has, including her supportive sisters, Grace and Hope, and their Father and Ger. I really really like their family and family dynamic, and their riches to rags struggles and triumphs. Beauty's bookworm, tomboy-ish ways were familiar to me and I've always loved this book.
