Very fun and memorable. This book does such a good job capturing a whole rich (in both senses) specific slice of a world (especially the food and language — the footnotes about both are so good). It’s not quite satire, and it still has you rooting for a few characters very genuinely, which was actually kind of a saving grace for me. Because 500 pages of straight satire would be exhausting. It's a fun trashy book -- I think I heard someone compare this to watching the tv soap opera Dynasty? Not a bad comparison! It's trashy new-money rich people and restrained old-money rich people mingling with our protagonist walking into this world unprepared. The author cannot get enough of dropping names and brands of cars, watches, clothes, and jewelry; he either loves thinking about these things, or thinks his readers will, but the characters who are put in the best light eschew all of this,
