I never read Streatfeild as a child, and it's really a shame. This book would have become a centerpiece of my identity as a kid, and I'm sure I would have bullied my friends and family into reading it so as to answer the final question of the novel: Which of the girls would you like to be? I adored this book, and am immediately sending copies to my niblings.

This book came up in conversation recently--as well it should! We should all be talking about this book, always!--which of course made me want to reread it. I can't believe how well it holds up considering how very OF ITS TIME it is, but who would not be enchanted by the story of three very different little girls, adopted by an eccentric explorer and raised by his great-niece ( ...more
