I am a fan of Caitlin Doughty's funny (and informative!) YouTube series "Ask a Mortician," so at first I was taken aback by the often deeply depressing tone of her memoir. There is a concrete reason why Doughty became so fascinated with death she made it her life's work, and it's a real bummer. I agree with the book's central thesis that modern Americans are too divorced - both emotionally and physically - from the reality of death. Interesting content, though that might go without saying. This book was okay. It's one of those memoirs where the content is so excellent, but the execution left me wishing it were more concise and better written.

This is a great book. It talks honestly and openly about the death industry and the dangers of our culture of eternal youth and death-denial. It's funny but informative, and really made me face some difficult questions.
