Apart from the overt moralizing and antiquated gender roles, this remains a captivating book. The relationships between the sisters ring especially true, and I nearly broke down sobbing when Beth died even though I obviously knew it was coming. The weakest parts of the story (like Jo's happily ever after marriage to the Professor) mostly seem to be the parts Alcott did not draw from her own life. ...more
