Finally, a science fiction novel where people talk a lot about food and drink a lot of tea. Very episodic, character-driven novel, the first in a series, about a small crew of Tunnelers. Tunnelers are folks from different sapien species who work building wormholes to different parts of the universe. It's not glamorous or highly paid work, but spending time with these characters was a joy. Also very much like Firefly.

So much of the sci fi I read is dystopian, so it was nice and refreshing to just, well, hang out with some fun aliens on a cool ship for a while. Some of the plot reminded me of some Star Trek TOS episodes I've seen: let's learn about this planet's culture and solve the ethical dilemma of the week.
The challenge for me was that the plot dragged. The central conflict that Chambers introduced in her first paragraph--Rosemary's forged identity and credentials--just fizzled out halfway through the bo ...more

It took me a while to warm up to this, but I ended up really liking it. The characters and their interactions were very well-done, and I liked how all of their sub-stories were woven together. The author did a nice job of portraying a future with multiple species living together - not something you always find.

It's about the people--not all human!--on a spaceship that punches black holes into space to allow for faster travel--but really, it's about the people. Great characters here, ones I was rooting for the whole time. I ...more

Although I didn't get round to adding this until February, I've actually been reading it for months through the kindle app, dipping in and out of it as I travel to and from work. In this way I feel like I've been travelling with the characters as they make their (long) way to that small and angry planet.
I think it probably is a little baggy and sprawling and it is a little didactic and heavy handed with some of the messages but I actually do not care. The characters are endearing and the univers ...more
