To Say Nothing of the Dog is both silly and sophisticated, complex and light. It’s the ideal blend of history, romance, time travel, and comedy. Willis’ unique book has quickly earned a spot on my favorite books list.

A mind-melting, cause-and-effect reversing, fantastic time-travel story told as a genteel Victorian mystery / farce; or maybe the other way around. A bibliophile's delight, with shout-outs to Dorothy L. Sayers and Jerome K. Jerome and sly winks to many more, all wrapped up in an insane plot that piles clues on top of crazy clues until the last piece snaps into place and the whole thing pops into perfect focus.[return][return]Pretty much perfect.

This is my first Connie Willis novel. I picked it up based on a recommendation from a panel talking about either time travel or unreliable narrators- I can't quite recall which. In any case, I really, really enjoyed it. Some things are terribly dated--it's almost twenty years old, after all--but it was so. Damn. Funny. I started reading this for a bookclub months ago. I didn't manage to finish it in time for our meeting, but I kept at it, a little bit at a time. It took me forever to finish, I just couldn't get into it for the longest time. The story was interesting enough, but there was so much added back and forth and background and bits and pieces that if was sometimes like wading through a flood of words to get anywhere.
