This is my first Connie Willis novel. I picked it up based on a recommendation from a panel talking about either time travel or unreliable narrators- I can't quite recall which. In any case, I really, really enjoyed it. Some things are terribly dated--it's almost twenty years old, after all--but it was so. Damn. Funny. I started reading this for a bookclub months ago. I didn't manage to finish it in time for our meeting, but I kept at it, a little bit at a time. It took me forever to finish, I just couldn't get into it for the longest time. The story was interesting enough, but there was so much added back and forth and background and bits and pieces that if was sometimes like wading through a flood of words to get anywhere.

Completely and utterly delicious. Pokes gentle fun at Victorian sentimentality without ever being obnoxious or smug. I had great fun picking out as many references as I could find.
