still amazing, still devastating. a precious jewel of a book.

I had a little bit of trouble with the conceit of the book - that the narration is the confession of a captured British spy being held by the Nazis, who are somehow okay with her spinning an emotional, meandering tale that involves creative reconstruction of dialogues and situations she didn't witness firsthand - but if you can suspend your disbelief (which I eventually did), it's a fantastic story.
