Some of Jemisin’s markers of prejudice in The Fifth Season appear trite on the surface, like some descriptions of the "model minority" requirements of the Fulcrum or the hard-middle-g consonant pattern of the "rogga" slur. However, she is as much an expert in what lies beneath the surface as her characters. When I got the 100 Thousand Kingdoms everyone was raving about it and I didn't enjoy it much. I'm relieved to say that people who told me this book and series is much better than that one were right. I'm landing on three stars because this book seems like a lot of setup, not necessarily a complete stand-alone piece. So hopefully book 2 &3 will stick the landing.
