Such a fun return for me to the fantasy genre! Great pacing, masterful integration of different narratives across different times, and left me ready for the next book.

Some of Jemisin’s markers of prejudice in The Fifth Season appear trite on the surface, like some descriptions of the "model minority" requirements of the Fulcrum or the hard-middle-g consonant pattern of the "rogga" slur. However, she is as much an expert in what lies beneath the surface as her characters. I was so-so on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (and didn't read the other two books in that series), but this one was much more up my alley. I loved how three different strands related to each other and converged, the world-building is excellent, and I'm going to buy the sequel right this afternoon because I can't wait to find out what happens next. ...more
