Some of Jemisin’s markers of prejudice in The Fifth Season appear trite on the surface, like some descriptions of the "model minority" requirements of the Fulcrum or the hard-middle-g consonant pattern of the "rogga" slur. However, she is as much an expert in what lies beneath the surface as her characters. I was so-so on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (and didn't read the other two books in that series), but this one was much more up my alley. I loved how three different strands related to each other and converged, the world-building is excellent, and I'm going to buy the sequel right this afternoon because I can't wait to find out what happens next.
