Some purple prose in there, it's true (and I sometimes lost a little track of the many characters), but it's absolutely essential, required reading. A tremendous story, a beautiful character study, and an important historical account. I'm a little embarrassed I just got around to it. ...more

The writing is so so good. It's such an important book. Even though some of the language used may be different now, it's covers so much of the same ground we're still covering today. It doesn't feel dated. We've come a long way and have a lot more to go. ...more

Devastating, brutal, brilliantly important. A fearless monument to the hell our binary brings to butches. It is clumsily written, which is a shame, but it does not detract from its power.
