I read a review in which the reviewer didn't think How to Be Both a very friendly book - I disagree entirely. I think it IS a friendly book; a generous book; a witty, warm and playful book. As I read it, I could hear Ali Smith's voice - rapid yet precise, sparking from topic to topic, making connections, looping back but never repeating, funny and insightful, very very clever and, yes, friendly.

I really enjoyed the section about George but the painter part was too meandering for me, and it built it up and made it interesting and then it kind of just ended. I don't know, I was into the idea of this book but maybe it just didn't work for me
