This is the first Rainbow Rowell novel I didn't immediately vacuum up like a brain-hoover because the first fifth of the novel drags a little. And Simon, the protagonist, is not terribly sympathetic at first - it's like starting off with the bitter, paranoid Harry Potter from Order of the Phoenix. But Baz (a sort of stand-in for Draco Malfoy) and Penelope (Hermione) are delightful right from the beginning. And after a while I really fell in love with the magical world of Carry On. I read this book and then forgot, which I guess means it was somewhat forgettable. Too bad... I love Rainbow Rowell's writing because she does angsty teen romance so well! But reading this was kind of a weird meta experience where for the first half I was just distractedly asking myself "Would this book even be enjoyable to someone who hadn't read Harry Potter and Fangirl (and I loved Fangirl.)?" Loved the world created here, as a sort of meta-response to the holes in Harry Potter's universe. Loved Agatha and Penny, and probably would've loved a book about either of them more. Didn't really buy the main romance for whatever reason - I know this is meant to be the last book in the "series," so it feels like a lot of the tension/angst/whatever that would've been built up in the earlier books just isn't there. Loved the spells and even enjoyed the plot twist, but overall this wasn't one of ...more
