The first book in a mystery series taking place in post-World War One England, this initially reminded me a lot of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, because it begins with a woman just starting out in the field of private investigation and opening up a small office, and it also takes place in a time and location where women don't traditionally investigate mysteries. I listened to this as an audio book, and what a perfect book to listen to - a gentle mystery, the delights of which are in the period details and atmosphere rather than the mystery itself. Maisie Dobbs, our heroine, is a little too perfect at times, and I disliked the precognition aspects of her detecting career that were brushed upon once or twice.
