I wanted to, but I just could not like this book. I kept giving it another chance but it never got there for me. I'm almost tempted to give it 1 star, but it definitely feels like a case of "not the right reader" and not necessarily "terrible book."

For the most part, I liked this book a lot. However, I would never recommend it to anyone because of the inexcusable racism it contains. It's set in the 1950s, yes, but published in 2009. The racism might have been period-typical, but it served no actual purpose in the book and was completely unnecessary. There was no earthly reason why one character had to wear yellowface, dress up in a racist costume, and assume a racist accent. I cringe every time I think about it, and I have no idea why an a
