For the most part, I liked this book a lot. However, I would never recommend it to anyone because of the inexcusable racism it contains. It's set in the 1950s, yes, but published in 2009. The racism might have been period-typical, but it served no actual purpose in the book and was completely unnecessary. I read this book partially because my uncle recommended it and partially because I've been looking to add some Canadian authors to my reading list but mostly because of the way the main character was described to me. This is the first book in a mystery series featuring 11-year old girl detective, Flavia de Luce. She loves chemistry and her specialty is poisons.

Flavia is such a delightful character! Clever and cynical, this eleven-year-old chemist sticks her nose in where it definitely does not belong, and solves a murder in the process. I can't wait to read the next in the series!
