In addition to having to suspend disbelief, sometimes a reader must also suspend their sense of annoyance. There are certain authors who can convince me to do that, and it appears Elaine Dundy is one of those select few. Certainly Sally Jay Gorce, the protagonist of this semi-autobiographical tale, is the reason we are beset with Bridget Jones' and Shopaholics and a plethora of other forgettable literary dingbats. This book is great! Any one who is reading Moveable Feast or On the Road and feeling like they want to read that from the perspective of a woman, should hop right on this one. Elaine Dundy was big in her time and there's an opportunity to make her big in our time again- put her back on the classics shelf.
