Absolutely lovely - I had a hard time believing this was a debut novel.
We follow our title characters, a woman of clay and a man of fire, as they share in the common struggles of turn-of-the-century immigrants to New York while trying to maintain the secret of their more fantastic natures. My second time reading. I remembered very little of the first time except very broad strokes, and the tin ceiling. It's a slow book, and I wasn't always eager to pick it up. But once I started reading, I usually found myself sucked in. The world is very full, and the characters have a lot of heart, but something about the plot leaves me unsatisfied in the end. The richness of the world and getting to immerse myself in 1890s/1900s New York is the best part.
